This year, we are having a particularly dry season. When it is dry like this, your pool can lose water faster than you might otherwise think. There are simple tests that you can perform yourself to check if the pool water is simply evaporating, or if you actually have a leak.
Of course, the best thing you can do is call us to come out and take a look for you. But if you are someone who likes to try things first for yourself, you can do something called a bucket test.
Get a nice big bucket. Fill with water and make a mark about an inch from the top. Mark the water level of the pool water on the outside of the bucket once you have placed it on the lowest step. Leave it sit in the pool for 24 hours, and take it out and measure the amount of water on the inside of the bucket, then the outside of the bucket. If the difference is more than an inch or two, then you probably have a leak.
If you have an automatic fill device on your pool a dropping water level may not be evident; high water bills may be the first indication of a leak problem. You may also notice an increase in the chemicals required to maintain proper balance, or that there is excess algae growth because the new water that’s being put into the pool is untreated.
It never hurts to have a preventative maintenance check up on your pool at least once a year. A small repair is easier and less expensive to make than a larger one.
