Salt Water vs. Chlorine?

Many pool owners are switching from the conventional chlorine swimming pools to salt water systems.  So what is the difference?  Instead of adding chlorine to your pool water in the traditional way, the salt water system requires that you add salt to achieve a target salinity.  The salt water system converts salt content in the water into chlorine needed to keep the pool water clean and clear.

This salt generator basically consists of a control box and a salt cell. The salt cell has metal plates in it which are connected to the control box. The control box sends an electrical charge to the plates which creates chlorine through a process called electrolysis. As pool water passes through the salt cell, the salt in the water is turned into Hypochlorous acid. Hypochlorous acid is the same component that is produced when any chlorine is added to pool water, whether you use sticks, tablets, granular or liquid. As the water returns to the pool, it will introduce the newly produced chlorine.

A salt water pool is also a chlorine pool because even though you are putting no chlorine into the pool, the end result will be chlorine that is produced from the salt generator.

The benefits of the salt water system includes a softer feel to the pool water, and many types of algae do not thrive in salt water to begin with.  The Soft water is better for your hair, skin, and eyes.

  1. We had Absolute Pool Repair convert our chlorine based pool to a salt based pool. The process took them several hours and they did a great job – neat and clean. The salt based water seems much softer on the skin and out clothing does not have that chlorine smell. Additionally, there is no Chlorine smell in and around the pool that seemed to be always present. We are very pleased with the results of the conversion process which was easy and and completed without doing any draining of water. All in all, they did a great job and I would recommend Absolute Pool to anyone. A great company to do business with in Vero Beach.
